French metallers OMMATIDIA are presenting a refreshing blend of Gothic, Doom and Atmospheric Metal on their debut album. Although the band's name might not ring a bell, OMMATIDIA is no newcomer since it is the offspring of former THE OLD DEAD TREE members Nicolas Chevrollier (guitar) and Vincent Danhier (bass). No wonder, then, that "In This Life, Or The Next" often reminds the listener of the much regretted Parisian act, disbanded late 2009. To achieve such a masterful debut, Vincent and Nicolas joined forces with vocalist Guillaume Richard (Dustbowl), guitarist Gilles Vardon (Jarell) and drummer Olivier Rouget (Sinn). Ranging from Paradise Lost through heavenwood and Katatonia to My Dying Bride, the basic influences of this young band bring a solid, traditional mid-nineties Gothic Metal flavor, enriched with their very own French touch! Founded in Paris in 2009, OMMATIDIA will surprise all Melodic Dark Metal fans with "In This Life, Or The Next", a first album filled with catchy crushing riffs and pure, genuine melancholy. A splendid dark gem not to be missed!
When The Old Dead Tree called it quits late 2009, that was a great loss for the French metal scene. Also for the undersigned this news came like a bolt from the blue, since I used to follow and support this Paris-based outfit intensively since their debut album ‘The Nameless Disease’. One day I stuck upon a message from Ommatidia and I took note of this name. Guitarist Nicolas Chevrollier, who once left The Old Dead Tree to focus on his family life, appeared to be fascinated by making music again. Bassist Vincent Danhier, also from The Old Dead Tree, joined him from the very beginning. After the end of the regretted band, they started looking for musicians to complete Ommatidia and make a real band of it. In February 2010 they achieved this.
Of course I was on the tiptoe of expectations for this debut! ‘In This Life, Or The Next’ will be released on the 21st of March by Season Of Mist and I am not disappointed in the least: you can be sure of top notch quality and beautiful melancholic vibes! Inspired by the echelons of the genre (Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost), Ommatidia has written nine songs in which magnificent emotive guitar solos meander through the tracks in a sublime manner. Vocalist Guillaume Richard chooses for a mainly clean vocal style, but even then he does a job full of variegation: in ‘Starspeed God’ and ‘Disclosure’ he sounds sensitive, sometimes vocals are a bit distorted or echoing (‘Unaffected By Loss’) and now and then one can hear an outburst of pent-up rage (semi-growls in ‘Leaning On Complete Affinity’). Influences of Paradise Lost are most obvious in ‘Serendipity’ and ‘Unaffected By Loss’. Vocals go through a dramatic highlight in ‘Senses Commotion’. The revitalized blend of gothic, doom and atmospheric metal is based on genuine emotions; that’s why it haunts you from the very first listen. Enjoy the howling guitars in the superb melancholic ‘Naked Truth’ and I bet it will not leave you unmoved. The band entrusted the mastering with Jens Bogren at the Fascination Street Studio and that’s also the place where many Katatonia albums were eternalized. Ommatidia is a true solace now that The Old Dead Tree does not exist anymore!
Après la fin regrettée par de nombreux fans du groupe The Old Dead Tree, il était resté un certain manque dans le domaine du metal Français. En effet, le groupe The Old Dead Tree avait amené un certain vent de fraîcheur par l’apport d’un style sombre et death metal mélodique. La refondation d’un nouveau groupe de metal par des anciens membres du combo Parisien a pour objectif de continuer à faire vivre ce groupe mais cette fois-ci sous le nom d’Ommatidia. Et dès la première écoute, il est bien ressenti la présence devenue fantomatique de The Old Dead Tree qui hante désormais les membres d’Ommatidia. Mais cette fois-ci, il en résulte un album beaucoup plus sombre et mélodique qui ne manque pas de force et de présence. Dans une introduction très douce montant progressivement sur des guitares saturées et un chant clair, celle-ci est vraiment belle et mélodique. De quoi vous plonger dans l’ambiance musicale du groupe. Dès que la deuxième piste "Starspeed God" s’enchaîne, ce sont des rythmiques jouées par des guitares pouvant être rapides ou mélodiques. Le chant clair appuie cet ensemble musical, d’où la combinaison de tous les instruments rappelant furieusement les albums de The Old Dead Tree. Eh oui, je cite à nouveau ce groupe mais que voulez-vous, c’est tellement flagrant que le fait de ne pas en parler m’aurait fait passer pour un inculte. Dans "Senses Commotion", le côté musical aux rythmiques répétitives et en même temps accrocheuses soutient un chant clair possédant plusieurs intonations. Par moments, ce dernier devient insistant et à la fois poussé avec un côté légèrement rauque. Mais le plus fort est que ce chant au final possède toujours ce côté aussi froid et sombre, nous permettant de rester dans cette une ambiance dark metal. Autre chanson marquante : "Shy Away". En effet, le chant alternant voix claire et rauque une nouvelle fois, les riffs lourds de la guitare saturée et le côté mélancolique aux mélodies marquantes sauront embellir les esprits. Et c’est sans compter le pont coupant le cours de la chanson par l’ajout d’un passage au clavier. Comme vous l’avez deviné, il s’agit d’un passage calme où la batterie, les guitares et le chant remontent progressivement, revenant dans l’ambiance de la piste oubliée durant quelques temps. Et pour les autres pistes, rien ne m’a lassé, tout a été force et mélancolie réunies. Même si "In This Life, Or The Next" ne contient que huit chansons (je ne compte pas l’introduction), vous aurez à réaliser plusieurs écoutes avant de pouvoir prétendre connaître entièrement cet album tellement celui-ci est varié. Ommatidia n’aura aucun souci à faire revenir les anciens fans de The Old Dead Tree et à gagner de nouveaux rangs dans le monde du metal.
