More information about Innern

Progressive black metal visionaries DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT return with Innern, their sixth studio album, set for release on September 12, 2025 via Season of Mist. Following the critical acclaim of Noktvrn (2021), the German quartet once again pushes boundaries, crafting an intensely focused meditation on suffering, transformation, and existential reckoning.

Formed in 2009 by guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter Nikita Kamprad, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT has risen from underground origins to become one of Europe’s most essential black metal voices. With Innern, the band turns its gaze inward, refining its signature fusion of blistering intensity and melancholic grandeur while embracing moments of atmospheric serenity and live-oriented dynamism.

Across six tracks, the album traverses cycles of collapse and emergence. Opener “Marter” embodies torment and catharsis, surrendering pain into the infinite cosmos. “Eos” offers a meditation on destruction and renewal, envisioning nature reclaiming the devastation of war. “Xibalba” confronts the machinery of fear and propaganda, invoking mythological imagery to urge a return to the core of human essence. “Fragment” reflects on incompleteness and the search for clarity, while “Forlorn”, sung in English, emerges as the band’s most vulnerable plea for emotional refuge.

Produced, mixed, and mastered by Kamprad in his Würzburg studio, Innern captures both immediacy and atmosphere. The interplay of Kamprad and Nicolas Rausch’s guitars oscillates between aggression and restraint, Alan Noruspur’s basslines pulse with gravity, and Tobias Schuler’s intricate drumming bridges technical precision with emotional nuance. The result is an album that confronts listeners with the void, while inviting them to seek clarity within it.

Innern is out September 12th via Season of Mist.
