Created by Dutch composer and multi-instrumentalist Faber Horbach, SOWULO is known for blending ancestral Northern European spirituality with cinematic, ritualistic soundscapes. On NIHT (“Night”), Sowulo steps away from the light and fully embraces the darkness: not as destruction, but as transformation. Written in the wake of the passing of both his father and stepfather in 2024, Horbach channels mourning, feminine wisdom, and mythological allegory into a work that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
The album explores the Night as the realm of the subconscious, ego death, and renewal. Tracks such as lead single Āsteorfan (“To Die”) confront mortality and the necessity of letting go, while Sōl ond Māni (“Sun and Moon”) uses a broken nyckelharpa to narrate the myth of celestial light hunted by wolves until Ragnarök. Mōnaþblōd (“Moonblood”), composed with and performed by vocalist Micky Huijsmans, honours the menstrual cycle as a sacred rhythm of decay and rebirth.
Blending instruments of the past, among which, the Carnyx, Tagelharpa, Celtic harp, nyckelharpa, lyre, with modern production, throat singing, and lush strings, NIHT conjures a sound both ancient and cinematic. This ceremonial descent into darkness is at once an act of surrender, remembrance, and renewal, offering listeners a mirror for their own inner journeys.
