More information about The Devil's Vertep

Ukrainian black-metal trio WINDSWEPT share their latest single, “The Potion,” taken from the upcoming album The Devil’s Vertep. Continuing their descent into the witch trials of 18th-century Western Ukraine, the track recounts the confession of Oryshka Lychmanykha, accused of brewing a poisonous elixir under the guidance of witches from Berdychiv.

“The Potion” stands as one of the record’s pivotal moments: a volatile clash of superstition and hysteria rendered through jagged tremolo guitars, sudden rhythmic convulsions, and stark percussive assaults. Sayenko’s vocals pierce through the tumult like a forced confession, embodying the suffocating atmosphere of accusation and judgment. The composition balances ritual repetition with eruptions of chaos, capturing the psychological collapse at the core of The Devil’s Vertep.

Drawn from authentic testimonies preserved in The Black Book of Kremenets Castle (1747–1777), the song situates personal tragedy within collective mania, bridging the intimate horror of Oryshka’s admission with the broader mythology of witchcraft that consumed the region. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at Viter Music, the single reflects Windswept’s signature immediacy: raw, instinctive, and unembellished.

The Devil’s Vertep unfolds as a six-part conceptual narrative tracing accusation, torture, confession, and execution: transforming archival records into unflinching black-metal expression. Cover art by Obsidian Bone reinforces the album’s atmosphere of ritual and dread.
