For three decades, 1349 have embodied the original spirit of black metal. Since manifesting from Oslo’s underground in the late ‘90s, the cold and hellish Norwegians have appeared at major European festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Hellfest and toured internationally with the likes of Cannibal Corpse and Carcass. Now, fresh from the ashes of their eighth album, the band are releasing a new live album. Though recorded shortly after pandemic lockdown was lifted, Winter Mass explodes out the gates with 1349’s aural hellfire. During their hour-plus set at Parkteatret in front of their home crowd, the band summon a career-spanning range of apocalyptic spells from their massive cauldron of chaos. Early classics like “I am Abomination” snarl and thrash with unchained madness. Whipped at a blistering pace, recent fan favorite “Striding the Chasm” only goes to show that when it comes to carrying the torch for Norwegian black metal, no one can match 1349. Experience aural hellfire in the flesh back where it all began with Winter Mass.
