The Funereal EP

One of Norway’s earliest purveyors of funeral doom, Funeral have been channeling sorrow and sonic weight since 1991. Led by founding drummer Anders Eek, the band has carved a legacy of tragedy-laced grandeur spanning over three decades.

The Funereal EP plunges even deeper into the abyss. At its core lies “Gamalt ljós,” a staggering three-part suite that captures the psychological torment of a perfectionist crushed by his own ideals. Sung entirely in Faroese, it balances soul-scorching dissonance and funereal elegance with emotional weight that borders on the unbearable. Anchored by glacial tempos, ominous string arrangements, and moments of spectral acoustic clarity, it unfolds like a psychological spiral—both beautiful and terrifying. Closing the EP is an acoustic reimagining of “Når kisten senkes,” originally from Gospel of Bones, stripped down to its spiritual marrow in a haunting meditation on death and transience.
