GERMANY’S Endstille have crafted seven full-lengths in a decade, marching ever-forward with an arsenal of monochromatic riffs, machine gun drums and the sort of conflict-obsessed lyrics which, in a black metal context, tend to (seemingly unfairly) raise questions as to the band’s political motives. At one time the group looked set to fill the hole Marduk had left prior to their post-Legion reinvention, as a straightforward, balls-to-the-wall military-minded BM band. While they may not delve into the Swedes’ occult weirdness, they have also evolved beyond a mere visceral assault, delving into bleak landscapes and wilful repetition, highlighted by the closing 10-minute epic, which highlights the rich, hypnotic Nordic menace within the group’s work.

Endstille has been one of those bands at the fringes of my black metal radar and here this German band is with its seventh album. When visiting German festivals, I’ve always noticed just how many blackened clad heliophobes wear the band’s shirts. The logo is distinctive, as are their war themed album covers, and this album continues their pummelling discography in fine style. This intro-less album kicks off with “Anomie” and immediately you are greeted with aural violence that is truly spiteful. Compared to other releases, “Infektion1813” uses some thrash based riffs, though this is in no way a black thrash album, far from it. There is little time to recover between songs, as it’s straight into “Trenchgoat” with merciless speed from start to finish. The longer “The Deepest Place On Earth” has a funeral styled riff that is balanced by eerie chant vocals and a deluge of double bass that actually have some definition rather than the fuzzy mess that black metal productions usually do to them. “Satanarchie” has a craziness you’d expect, judging from its title, as the track takes momentary millisecond pauses for blast emphasis. Few black metal albums truly ever capture what I really want, but Endstille do for me what Marduk always do with each of their albums: challenge your expectations yet keep the template intact, none more so than the massive closing song “Endstille (Völkerschlächter)” that seems to focus on the world’s violent history and the leaders who have made, or make, decisions on our behalf. The song has an early Enslaved style, being epic and repetitive for all the right reasons.

Redeployed with new frontman, Zingultus (from Nagelfar, Graupel), ENDSTILLE provide a united assault on the senses with new album “Infektion 1813”. Each song thrusts the listener to the front lines. It is a well produced album with a slightly cleaner tone than previous bombardments, but still brutal and blistering. “Infektion 1813”, like most of their arsenal, is a trip through military history which takes the listener from the Napoleonic wars to the present. Mayhemic Destructor’s blast beats are the artillery behind the haunting lyrical landscape of war-torn Europe. “Infektion 1813” is a little more melancholy than previous assaults, but this adds more depth and weight to the offensive as a whole. It’s time to take cover, the battle has begun.

Enregistré avec leur nouveau chanteur/frontman Zingultus (NAGELFAR, GRAUPEL), le nouvel et septième opus des Allemands ENDSTILLE va sortir cette fois-ci via le label Season-Of-Mist. Virage assez important donc pour les black-métalleux d'outre Rhin après plus de dix années passées à nous abreuver de "true" black-metal estampillé 90's. Depuis leur premier album "Operation Winterstorm" (2002), leur démarche est restée assez guerrière ne décevant personne dans le milieu extrême avec peut-être des hauts et des bas dans leur discographie conséquente. Mais ils ont su garder le cap notamment avec des prestations scéniques marquantes telle cette tournée européenne de mars 2006 avec DARK FUNERAL, qui les avaient bien mis en avant auprès du public français notamment. Alors, comment se présente "Infektion 1813" ? Endstille a choisi pour cet album de nous faire réfléchir avec tout d\'abord ce titre qui a pour thème les grandes batailles européennes de 1813 qui ont en quelque sorte \"infectées\" nos vies en donnant le point de départ de guerres sans fins et ravageuses. Du point de vue musical, le black agressif est toujours d'actualité avec cette voix criarde mise en avant et ces tempos où les blasts font la loi majoritairement, la guitare tricotant ses riffs malsains en back-ground. Après un "Navigator" adouci, un "Endstille Reich" controversé manquant de relief, et un "Verfürher" arracheur de tripes, "Infektion 1813" fait la part des choses en favorisant des ambiances de nature morte, sans renier une puissance de feu dévastatrice. Au menu, mélodies malfaisantes, chœurs et déclamations grinçantes se complaisant dans des compositions froides, glaciales et haineuses avec rythmiques d\'enfer, "true black" quoi ! Pour ma part, je considère que ce nouvel opus est peut-être celui de la maturité entre des relents heavy-black à la IMMORTAL et des odeurs de souffre à la MARDUK, une facilité d'écoute étant bien présente. Si un seul titre devait représenter ces 44 minutes de noirceur épique, je choisirais "Satanorgie" avec ses variations osées et ses ambiances recherchées ciselant notre âme noire. Seule ombre au tableau, le dernier titre "Endstille (Völkerschlächter)" qui reste assez incongru de prime abord. Pendant dix minutes nous avons droit à une énumération sans fin de certains "bourreaux des peuples", de Napoléon à Tito, en passant par Mussolini, Ceausescu, Komeny, W. Bush jusqu'à Hosni Mubarak. Un morceau un peu lourd, indigeste et lassant au final même si l'idée de départ était bonne. Mis à part cette dernière piste, l'album se révèle très intéressant et accrocheur c'est certain. Il représente un excellent renouveau pour le black-metal Allemand et devrait pouvoir figurer en bonne place dans votre discothèque, vous l'aurez compris.

Machen wir uns nichts vor: Nach dem Ausstieg des Sängers kann kaum eine Band einfach so weitermachen wie bisher. Der Verlust von Rampensau Iblis verändert einiges bei Endstille, und konsequenterweise haben sie nach einigen Tests gar nicht länger versucht, ein Abziehbild zu finden. Der Neue, Zingultus, hat mit Nagelfar und Graupel längst eigene Duftmarken gesetzt – und schafft es, den Sound der Kieler neu zu lenken, ohne ihn dramatisch zu verändern. Seine stimmliche Variabilität in den verschiedensten Spielarten des Black Metal-Gebrülls setzt Akzente. Geflüster, Sprechgesang, gar melodische Einsprengsel gab es bisher nie, aber auch die annähernde Iblis-Kopie hat er (etwa in ‘Trenchgoat’) drauf. Die Revolution bleibt trotzdem aus, denn Riffmaster Wachtfels schraubt hier wieder eine Vollspektrum-Dröhnwalze nach der anderen raus. INFEKTION 1813 ist für Endstille-Maßstäbe eher Schonkost: Mehr Melodiebögen, weniger Gehämmer, aber alles nicht in Regionen, dass jetzt Herzinfarkte bei Old School-Fans zu fürchten wären. Im Gegenteil, mehr zu entdecken gab es noch nie, nur dass mein Kolumbus-Gen beim zehnminütigen Rausschmeißer ‘Endstille (Völkerschlächter)’ versagt: ein Riff ad nauseam, über das Zingultus die Namen von „Massenmördern“ von Julius Cäsar bis Alexander Lukaschenko deklamiert.

ENDSTILLE mögen durch den Zugang von Zingultus (v.; ex-Nagelfar/Graupel) einen höheren Anspruch an sich selbst entwickelt haben. Doch keine Angst bzw. zu früh gefreut: Ohne Intro hämmert der Opener ´Anomie´ aus dem Stand eines der bösartigsten Black-Metal-Riffs aller Zeiten raus und hinterlässt ein Schlachtfeld, dessen letzte noch zuckende Leiber von ´Trenchgoat´ endgültig zerfetzt werden. Die Fortschritte finden sich im Kleingedruckten. Die böse Achse Kiel-Aachen serviert pure, vernichtende Energie und Massaker-Blast auf Augenhöhe mit gänsehäutigem Riffing (in ´Wrecked´ gar mit Thrash-Kante), fettestem Groove (wer bei ´Bloody H (The Hurt-Gene)´ nicht komplett zur „one man army“ wird, hat offensichtlich die ersten beiden Albumtracks nicht überlebt) und einem Gespür für unanbiedernde Eingängigkeit. Es ist atemberaubend, wie diese Gratwanderung gelingt. ENDSTILLE agieren abseits von „trve“, „necro“ und Selbstparodie. Sie machen, was man als Black-Metal-Elite-Einheit nun mal tut: Sie töten. Und sie siegen. Auf ganzer Linie.
