TEMIC Grieve with Grace on New Single “Broken”

TEMIC certainly lived up to the hype with their chart-topping debut, but the international prog supergroup have grown by leaps and bounds on their mighty and magical second album. Fans and critics are trembling in anticipation for Ceiba, the group’s thunderous ode to loss.

“TEMIC are back in full bloom with Ceiba”, Metal Injection writes in this month’s edition of the Progressive Injection.

Prog Magazine agreed, naming the album’s lead single “Ceased to Be” a track of the week.

Today, TEMIC are releasing the second advanced single from Ceiba. “Broken” bares the album’s soul with grief and grace.

“‘Broken’ is built around overwhelming emotion and honesty”, TEMIC vocalist Fredrik Klemp says. “We wrote the song in 30 minutes. It came together instinctively. There was no need to overthink it or make it into something more than what it already was. We simply allowed it to be what it is. I think that’s where the song gets its strength”.

“The honesty of this song became very important to my vocal performance”, Klemp continues. “It connects to experiences and emotions that are deeply personal to me. Rather than distance myself from them, I wanted to let those emotions come through in my voice. My performance sits deliberately close to the edge, fragile and unsteady, as if it could give way at any moment”.

Before they joined forces in 2023, TEMIC had already established themselves as premiere players of progressive metal and rock. The group features current and former members of Devin Townsend, Mike Portnoy’s Shattered Fortress, Neal Morse Band, Haken, Shining, Maraton and Big City. But while mind-blowing on a technical level, Ceiba is grounded in raw emotions. In Mayan culture, the titular tree is considered sacred for its connection between the earth, heaven and the underworld.

“We love how the image of the Ceiba connects to the album’s overarching theme of loss”, TEMIC keyboardist and sound designer Diego Tejeida says.

Like the tree depicted on the album’s lush cover art, “Broken” is the moment where Ceiba cracks open from a surge of grief. The song mourns the end of a codependent relationship while accompanied by little more than ghostly synths and electronic drums that beat like a heart on life support. “Crushed by the weight of our burdens / We couldn’t bear when it was over”. Though he still possess masterful vocal control, Klemp pushes until the last aching note leaves everyone in tears.

“There is no real resolution to ‘Broken’”, Klemp says. “I think that’s part of why it feels so honest. It captures the point where what we carry quietly becomes too heavy to contain and the vulnerability of recognizing that same struggle in someone else”.
