CYNIC just wrapped up a special co-headlining tour of North America. Paul Masvidal and his band of cosmically gifted players celebrated the 30th anniversary of their debut album with help from their in-state buddies and fellow progressive music icons Atheist. So it’s no surprise to hear they put on a stellar show.

On Thorns I Lay are Greek titans. The band came up through the underground during the early ’90s, in the wake of Nightfall, Septicflesh and Rotting Christ. But while those bands were swayed more by symphonic and black metal, these Athenians developed a taste for the gothic. Which makes sense. After all, they are named after a Shakespearean sonnet.

No one loves to watch God suffer quite like Profanatica. Since the late ’80s, Paul Ledney and his corpse-painted band of miscreants have amassed a long and infamous career as one of America’s truly definitive black metal bands. PSYGNOSIS make a distinctly progressive type of extreme metal. Sure, the French band has two guitarists who grind out plenty of crunching, distorted riffs, and their drummer is by no means shy when it comes to hammering out blast beats. But this extreme metal band doesn’t have a vocalist. Instead, they’ve got a cellist.
