Heilung – Sagas

Heilung are known around the world for mending the spiritual gap between modern life and our historical roots. Over the past decade, the ritual collective have brought amplified history to major festivals, the Billboard charts and Hollywood films. Now, with Sagas, they fully immerse themselves in the realm of video games.     Sagas holds a special place in Heilung’s discography. It collects recordings that core members Maria Franz, Kai Uwe Faust and Christopher Juul created in collaboration with Ninja Theory for Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga. Taken together, these 11 tracks reveal a more cinematic and environmental side to their unmistakable sound. Performed live during The Game Awards, the entrancing “Seidh” invokes the Norse mythology that guides Senua on her quest through 9th century Iceland.  While it captures the epic journey of Hellblade II, Sagas takes on a life of its own. Franz, Faust and Juul returned home from a 10-day trip across Iceland so inspired by the brute force of nature that they recorded more tracks than the ones that were included in the game. Awakened by rumbling drums and fiery chanting, the previously unheard “Slagt” prophesizes the coming apocalypse with the unstoppable force of a volcano. And yet, even when faced with the inevitable end of the world as we know it, Heilung’s music offers a space for healing. Lead single “Laeknisgaldr” remedies an affliction through the simple act of repetition, like water washing over stone.     With Sagas, Heilung return from the land of Hellblade with immersive new sounds.
