Formed in Paris in 1994, MERRIMACK are one of the French black metal underground's most uncompromising fixtures, with a catalogue built on corrosive sound and unrelenting artistic conviction. Their 2024 album Of Grace and Gravity marked yet another step forward in a career defined by refusal to dilute.

"Wrong" is a cover of the Martin L. Gore-penned track from Depeche Mode's 2009 record Sounds of the Universe—a song whose original already carried more darkness than most metal acts dare to summon. Merrimack recorded the instrumental during The Acausal Mass sessions at Necromorbus Studio in 2012, then let it sit for over a decade before finally adding vocals and releasing it. The result is not a reinterpretation so much as an excavation: the composition is preserved note for note, the band's only contribution being the violence black metal affords. What Gore wrote as cold, hollow synth-pop becomes, in Merrimack's hands, something genuinely bleak—the obsessive self-negation of the lyrics finding a more fitting home than the original ever offered.
